Citation Helps

Note: Seeing blank spaces below?  Depending on your browser, you may need to enable external content. Not sure how? These Strategies for Helping Students Cope  (Links to an external site.) will show you what to do. Exactly what is APA Style, and why is it used?

Should I really buy the text? Yes! Not only is it required for many of your courses, but your familiarity with APA style will help you submit properly formatted documentation, which means better grades for you! The APA style book (The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association) can be purchased directly from the APA, through the Emporia State Bookstore  (Links to an external site.) , or from such retails outlets as Amazon or Barnes & Noble. The manual comes in various formats.  The softcover version (ISBN: 978-1-4338-0561-5; the spiral bound version (ISBN: 978-1-4338-0562-2) costs a little more, but will lie flat on your desktop and is easier to work with.  There is also a Kindle version of the manual.  One caution:  The first printing of the 6th edition contains many errors.  It was very soon after reissued with corrections.  While you are able to download a list  (Links to an external site.) of the errors and their corrections, you are safer to purchase a later version. Check the copyright page, opposite the Table of Contents. If it is a second printing, the second paragraph will read “Second printing: August 2009.” If it is the first printing, this information will appear on the last line, near the bottom of the page. What if I'd rather work from online content? Many students today are accustomed to seeking and using online resources to support their work. This is possible with help from two APA starting points:  The APA Style Blog  (Links to an external site.) allows you to seek style answers via a standard site search – this is especially helpful for electronic resources citation.  Also, the main APA Style  (Links to an external site.) page offers Quick Answers links for both formatting and references questions. You may also choose to use the resources made available by the Purdue Online Writing Lab  (Links to an external site.) site (OWL).  This site is well maintained and updated, and also offers easy search capabilities. What About Citation Generators? Citation generators, such as Citation Machine  (Links to an external site.) and others, are frequently used by students.  However, buyer beware!  If the data you input to the citation generator is incorrect, the resulting reference or citation will also be flawed.  You might find it easier to simply learn and understand the rules of citation and forego using these services.
