“Academic integrity is a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. From these values flow principles of behavior that enable academic communities to translate ideals into action” (Center for Academic Integrity, 1999, p.4). Although the document The Fundamental Values of Academic Integrity (Links to an external site.) is directed toward educators, it is easy to see how the values might be applied to you as a master's student. Scholarly writing intends to inform others, and must maintain high standards of integrity. The Center for Academic Integrity (1999) further describes these five fundamental values associated with academic integrity in their report (use the link above to read the report in its entirety): Honesty. An academic community of integrity advances the quest for truth and knowledge by requiring intellectual and personal honesty in learning, teaching, research, and service. Trust. An academic community of integrity fosters a climate of mutual trust, encourages the free exchange of ideas, and enables all to reach their highest potential. Fairness. An academic community of integrity establishes clear standards, practices, and procedures and expects fairness in the interactions of students, faculty, and administrators. Respect. An academic community of integrity recognizes the participatory nature of the learning process and honors and respects a wide range of opinions and ideas. Responsibility. An academic community of integrity upholds personal accountability and depends upon action in the face of wrongdoing. ESU & SLIM Academic Dishonesty Policies The SLIM policy on academic dishonesty lists penalties that may be assessed for misconduct as it regards academic honesty. Emporia State also offers policy language regarding disciplinary action you might face should your involvement in plagiarism or other types of academic cheating become known. As a future library professional, your adherence to these standards is of special importance, as the information you disseminate to others can be an important factor in the ways they understand academic honesty and integrity and use these concepts in their own information seeking and disseminating activities.
