This week we're going to do something a little different. The reading assignment in Cassell & Hiremath (chapters 4,5,6,8,9,10) is all about different reference sources. Your assignment is to ask three questions to your classmates that can be answered by at least one of the difference sources discussed in the chapters (databases, dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc). Ask a variety of questions, where each can be answered by a different source. Then, pick one person's questions, answer them, and talk about what specific source you used and why. Where you both thinking of the same sources?

Scenario One

Patron on phone: Yes. I’m researching a report on library usage in the state of Missouri and I’m having trouble finding an authoritative source that can tell me how many public libraries there are in Missouri. Can you help me?”

Scenario Two

Patron at information desk: “Okay, this is going to come across as super-bizarro and I know you’re going to think I’m crazy. But, here goes. There was a TV documentary series that said the reason the printing press was invented when it was in the 1300s? 1400? 1500s? (whenever it was, it doesn’t matter.) – Anyway, the reason it was invented then was because people started wearing underwear. No, I swear I’m not making this up. I know it’s pretty funny. Do you think you can me help find the name of the documentary series? I think it was called links, maybe? I just know I saw it but I can’t remember anything about the show.”

A: The name of that documentary series was ---.

Scenario Three

  * Virtual Librarian: Do you need help? A librarian is online ready to help. [Chat Now] [No Thanks]
  * Scott: Hey thiis Scott.  I was diggin aroun my  grampa’s attic an found a really ol book (like freakin 1890s, right) and I waned to now if it was a collector’s ietm. I tried to find  e-bay and the web but I couldn’t find anyo info. called Illumination by  somebody Frederick. Fredericks the last name”
  * Virtual Librarian: “Hi Scott. Let’s see what we can find out. Before I get started can you tell me the first name of the author?”
  * Scott: “Oh, man. I don’t hav it wit me. I think it was Hary or Henry. I now it started with a H. Maybe it was Hal?!?”
  * Virtual Librarian: “That’s alright. I am training a new librarian tonight and they are going to help me with the search. We’ll be back with you shortly.”
  * Scott: “thanks, Doods! 😊”
